The World’s Most Famous Virgin

I needed a couple of weeks before I felt comfortable back in my own home. I’d barely lived there since renting it days before I left for The Bachelorette. Now, about four months later, every day was an adventure in discovering where I’d put the few things I owned, like dishes, blankets, and old football jerseys. The place didn’t reflect a lifestyle as much as it did a life in search of a style. I relied on the dozens of little soaps and shampoos I’d taken from hotels and snacks I’d saved from planes and photo shoots. This was no way to live, and yet somehow … well, I remember one day, as I walked around eating a meal I’d had delivered, I had this feeling of not being able to find my life. Where had I put it?

To find out, all I had to do was watch TV. Season fourteen of The Bachelorette was scheduled to premiere on May 28, 2018. With a week to go, I was counting down the days. I remembered the fateful words my producer Robbie said after Becca sent me home: “Congratulations, you’re now famous.” Having grown up in the era of reality TV, not to mention schooling myself in dozens of seasons of The Bachelorette and The Bachelor, I knew what he meant. What I didn’t—and couldn’t—know was how that would affect me. I was excited and scared.

Very scared. On the show, I’d opened up about personal issues in ways I’d never shared with my family or close friends, and it was all about to get served up on TV to ten million viewers and opened up for discussion to even more people inside the Twitterverse. It was every OMG and WTF moment I’d ever had wrapped into one. I prepared my mom and dad before I started to trend. When they asked if I was ready, I laughed nervously and said I honestly didn’t know what to expect.

On the plus side, I figured time was on my side. My date with Becca wherein I talked to her about my virginity didn’t happen until week seven. All the Tia drama in the earlier episodes would be an easy warmup, like a stretching exercise, before I opened up to Becca about love and loss and … uh, that other thing. I could manage.

Relieved, I helped plan a viewing party at my dad’s house for the season premiere. My dad invited a bunch of his friends and put out a buffet. My mom brought her crew and arrived with more food. A party-time atmosphere filled the packed house, and I had much more fun than I thought—until the show began to wrap up.

That’s when the bomb was dropped. Chris Harrison introduced a super tease of the rest of the season and suddenly everyone heard my voice, shaky and emotional: “I’ve been hiding something from her.” Then they cut to my dinner date with Becca in the Bahamas. First an establishing shot. Then a close-up.
